The 2019 ADFAS Garden & Art Tour of Japan visits many wonderful gardens including three of Japan’s most revered gardens; all different, and based in spectacular locations across Japan. Many gardens (called Museums) are attached to some of Japan’s iconic temples, museums, galleries and historical villas. Through the prism of the Japanese gardens, you will gain a rich insight into Japan’s unique culture and traditions, its art, history and modern-day life. The tour takes place in November – an ideal time of year to visit Japan, not too hot, not to cold, and the gardens are ablaze with autumn colours.

  • Unique gardens, traditional to ultra-modern, from Tokyo, to the west coast, the Inland Sea and Kyoto
  • Kanazawa – Kenrokuen Garden, a castle garden dating back to the 17thcentury
  • Hakone Open-Air Museum gardens with sculptures from Henry Moore and Rodin and a spectacular backdrop of maple and cherry trees
  • Bizen ceramic-ware, highly prized for some 1000 years, galleries, craft shops and working kilns
  • Meet one of Japan’s most prominent potters in his studio and private garden

  • Experience Naoshima in Japan’s magical Seto Inland Sea, a cutting-edge contemporary garden known as the ‘Art Island’
  • Stay in a traditional Japanese ryokan inn, experience an authentic kaiseki-style banquet and a soak in a hot-spring onsen
  • Explore Adachi Museum of Art Garden in rural Yasugi on the west coast of Japan – nominated Japan’s most popular garden for 12 consecutive years
  • Try workshops – indigo dying, silk weaving, paper making, cooking classes, or explore Kyoto’s bustling food and textile markets
