Overview

The islands of Sardinia and Corsica each have a unique history stretching back millennia. They have distinct languages, culture and identity. This tour offers an exploration of these two Mediterranean islands which, despite centuries of invasion, plunder and settlement, retain a proud independent spirit. In their beautiful setting, we discover the diverse histories of each island, from their ancient sites through to their rich contemporary cultures. Extended stays on each island combine site and museum visits with time for independent sightseeing.

Experience

  • A sweeping span of pre-historic and historic sites: Bronze Age, Phoenician, Roman,  Byzantine, Pisan, Genoese and French
  • A fascinating cultural mix, blending ageless island traditions with modern Italian and French sensibilities
  • Spectacular coastal and mountain scenery, much of it in pristine condition, including World Heritage listed sites
  • Vibrant contemporary cultures which have remained defiantly independent, despite centuries of invasion and occupation
  • Excellent food and wine, based on locally sourced ingredients: seafood, cheeses, wines and meats

Highlights

  • Sardinia’s remarkable Stone Age and Bronze Age sites: 3,000-5,000 year old villages, castles, watch towers, sacred wells and burial sites
  • Roman, Phoenician and Byzantine ruins scattered throughout both islands
  • The fascinating medieval melting pot of Alghero, with its Catalan-Gothic monuments
  • Stunning scenery on  Sardinia’s west coast, limestone cliffs, coastal wetlands and
  • Bonifacio, founded in the 10th century, perched on the precipitous limestone cliffs of southern Corsica
  • Ajaccio, birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, still revered in modern France
  • The Scandola Nature Reserve on Corsica’s west coast
  • The superb scenery of Corsica’s central mountain range, with towering granite peaks, oak forests and narrow valleys
